ZXE-5000 Series Overview
THE ONLY UL LISTED, CHICAGO AND NEW YORK APPROVED EXIT SIGN LED STRIP RETROFIT KIT OF ITS KIND
We are so used to seeing exit signs everywhere, that when it comes to building efficiency, many engineers forget they even exist! Incandescent and fluorescent exit signs can cost a fortune in electricity and maintenance. Replacing older exit signs with new led signs can get quite costly and time consuming (removing the old sign, assembling the new one, drilling holes, making connections, and even repainting surfaces).
Our ZXE-5000 series exit sign LED retrofit kits can save you both time and money. Designed in the United States by our team of experienced engineers, the retrofit kits transform your incandescent or fluorescent exit signs in much brighter and safer LED signs, while saving time on installation. Our kits install in under 10 minutes, are affordable and maintenance free. In many areas, electricity suppliers offer rebates for every kit installed. (I.e. ComED offers $20 rebate). Our kits typically pay for themselves in under a year in electricity and maintenance savings (labor, replacememtb bulbs, etc.)
The ZXE-5000 series features:
- Uses only 4.5 Watts.
- Maintenance free - No more replacing lamps.
- 10 year manufacturer warranty.
- Installed in only 10 minutes.
- Pays for itself in about 1 year. (See the Savings Calculator)
- Fits most exit signs (Sure-Lites, Cooper Lighting, Alkco, Alpha, Western Lighting, Lithonia, Big Beam, High-Lites, etc.).
- Universal voltage 120V - 277V.
- Tested and certified by UL (UL-924).
- City of Chicago and New York approved.
- Available rebates from most electricity suppliers such as Con Edison ($15 / retrofit - New York area) and ComEd ($20 / retrofit - Chicagoland area)
The LED exit sign retrofit kits use only about 4.5 Watts of power, about 12 times less than an incandescent exit sign and 5 times less than a fluorescent exit sign. Our kits are not only energy efficient, but also very bright - the light output is at an amazing 77 lumen per watt.
The kits were designed to outlast other incaldescent and fluorescent exit signs. This translates into far less less maintenance costs, since electricians do not need to replace incandescent or fluorescent lamps that keep burning out. The LED's have an estimated life of over 50,000 hours, while incandescents last for under 2000, and fluorescents under 5000!
When you take into consideration all the savings, the kit pays for itself in about a year! Just on electricity savings alone, the return on investment is under a year and a half, and even shorted when saving on replacement bulbs and labor is factored in. The ZXE-5000-I-UNV and ZXE-5000-E-UNV exit sign retrofit kits were designed to fit many exit signs signs. Some brands we tested with the kits are: Sure-Lites, Cooper Lighting, Alkco, Lightolier, Alpha, Western Lighting, Lithonia, Big Beam, High-Lites and more. The exit sign retrofit kits are also tested and certified by UL for safe use in many exit signs, including edge lit and can type. Our signs are also much brighter when compared to standard incandescent and fluorescent lamps, providing better visibility in case of an emergency.
Still not convinced the ZXE-5000 is the best alternative to incandescent and fluorescent exit signs?

Quick note about the default data:
Cost of electricity as of September 2009 was 11.33cents/KWH. Average cost per exit sign bulb is $6 and fluorescent lamp is $5. Average cost for electrical work is $58/hr. According to SureLites by Cooper Lighting, fluorescent signs use 23 Watts and incandescent signs use 52 watts. Incandescent bulb life time and fluorescent lamp life time is based on EnergyStar ratings (2000 incandescent, 5000 fluorescent, see this link).
As of the date of this document, 3/1/11, Comed offers a rebate of $20 and Con Edison of $15 per exit sign retrofitted. Be sure to check and apply with your utility company to be certain your project qualifies.

1. Box-type sign with internal kit model
|
|
|
This type of exit sign is the most common. As you can see here, it has plenty of space at the bottom to accomodate the internal unit without cutting off any light to any of the letters.

2. Box-type sign with external kit model

This type of sign is shorter, and letters start closer to the bottom. In this case, we used an external kit to avoid blocking the bottom of the letters. In this example, the driver is connected at the top, however, it can be mounted on the sides as well.

3. Edgelit-type sign with internal kit model

As you can see in the following images, this is a Edgelit sign with battery backup watch lights at the top.
Before retrofitting it, this exit sign had two fluorescent T8 lamps. They were removed and replaced with our retrofit kit. This sign was connected to 277V and was wasting about 27 Watts. Now, instead of replacing lamps a few times every year, we sit back and enjoy a brighter sign that only uses 1/6 of the power (4.5 Watts).
The mounting is relatively easy, just a couple of screws need removed, and the lamp supports just snap out, allowing for the kit brackets to be screwed in.

This particular unit has a slightly odd construction. Inside, it has two flat metal bars on the left and right side (as seen in image below) that the manufacturer glued to the exit sign on left and right using double sided tape (it was used to hold the fluorescent guts). It is very possible to remove these two bars and fit an internal model in there, however it's slightly time consuming. We found that simply using an external unit with the power supply mounted on top of the LED strip slides in very easy, saving us about 3-4 minutes.
